Defending Raybestos Rookie of the Year David Ragan has avoided the sophomore slump in the Nationwide Series, finishing 16th or better in every race thus far in 2008.
Ragan, who drives Roush Fenway Racing’s No. 6 Ford, ranks fourth in the Nationwide points standings, with three top-10 finishes.
“Our team has been very consistent this year,” Ragan said. “We have made great strides in our program this season. Our equipment is top notch and our race setups have been very accurate.”
Ragan and crew chief Mike Kelley expect the same in this weekend’s Pepsi 300 at Nashville Superspeedway. But Ragan said he’ll have to be more careful than usual since there will be a higher number of younger drivers than usual in the race because only six Cup drivers are entered.
“There will be a lot of young drivers in the race, so our main focus is to stay up front and out of trouble,” Kelley said. “David ran well here last time around and I am confident he can do it again. We got a top-10 [with a seventh-place finish] and we left a lot on the table.
“The Discount Tire team has been working hard to operate as one cohesive unit. Our race day crew has been unbelievably consistent this year. I feel like that will make a big difference this weekend. Traditionally, Roush Fenway cars have done well at Nashville. I hope to continue that trend and bring home a great finish.”
Ragan, of course, is still a young driver himself, as he turned 22 in December.
“Nashville is a fast concrete track that is very challenging,” Ragan said. “Since the Cup series is off this weekend we can focus a little better on the task at hand. There will be a lot of young drivers out to prove their worth this weekend. We need to stay up front and practice patience, and everything else will fall into place.”
