DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – As technical inspection began Tuesday for entries in Saturday’s Camping World 300 NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Daytona International Speedway, there also was a little scrambling to try to secure a spot in the lineup.
A tentative list of those guaranteed spots was posted in the garage Tuesday morning, but series director Joe Balash said the list would not be finalized until this afternoon.
The top 30 cars entered from the 2008 owner points are locked in the field as long as they attempted to qualify for all the races last season.
There were 34 teams that attempted all the races last year, and 29 are currently entered. NASCAR does not allow teams to buy points but typically allows transfers if the original owner still has a minimal ownership stake in the car.
Among the points transfers that already have been approved are JTG Daugherty Racing’s No. 59 points going to Penske Racing’s No. 12 (driver Justin Allgaier), Fitz Motorsports’ No. 22 points going to SK Motorsports’ No. 07 (David Green) and Davis Motorsports’ No. 01 points going to R3 Motorsports' No. 23 (Robert Richardson).
The Chip Ganassi Racing No. 40 points (21st overall) could end up with driver Kenny Hendrick (no relation to Hendrick Motorsports owner Rick Hendrick) in the No. 42 Smith-Ganassi Racing car. Ganassi is listed as the owner of the Kenny Hendrick car on the entry list. It is likely that Front Row Motorsports, which had the No. 24 points last year as part of a deal with McGill Motorsports and was 28th overall, would like to transfer those points to its No. 34 car for driver Tony Raines, but that transfer has yet to be approved as well.
Other owners who have not returned and whose points are not accounted for are Richard Childress Racing’s No. 2 (second overall), Richard Petty Motorsports’ No. 9 (15th) and Phoenix Racing’s No. 4 (30th).
There are 50 cars entered. There were 49 as of Monday, and Trail Motorsport has entered Johnny Borneman III.

Feb 10, 2009 at 9:53 PMmaybe it's just me, but I'm surprised that there are 50 cards attempting the 300. I really didn't think that so many teams would show up- I was expecting it to be like 45 teams, with about 10-15 of them being start and park.
