NASCAR has penalized two Nationwide Series crew chiefs for violations found last weekend at Watkins Glen International.

Kirk Almquist, crew chief for Gillett Evernham Motorsports’ No. 9 Dodge driven by Patrick Carpentier, and Paul Wolfe, crew chief for Fitz
Motorsports’ No. 22 Dodge driven by Ryan Newman, were hit with monetary penalities.

Almquist was fined $5,000 when NASCAR officials discovered the combined thickness of the throttle shaft and throttle plate in the carburetor was less than the specified 0.197 inches.

Wolfe was fined $1,000 because the fuel line from the fuel cell to the fuel filter exceeded the maximum size.

Both infractions were discovered during opening-day inspection on Aug. 8.

Yes they were trying to cheat. "...combined thickness of the throttle shaft and throttle plate in the carburetor was less than the specified 0.197 inches." This saves weight giving the crew chief the opportunity to place weight where he feels he needs it. "...the fuel line from the fuel cell to the fuel filter exceeded the maximum size." This gives the driver a little more fuel than the rest of the field.

It was not the weight of the shaft but the smaller size to restrict less, giving more air into the engine.
