Stephen Leicht will join Jeff Burton in driving Richard Childress Racing’s No. 29 NASCAR Nationwide Series entry next season, the team announced Thursday.

Leicht, 21, has run a part-time Nationwide schedule for RCR this year after earning his first career series victory and finishing seventh in the point standings during his rookie season in 2007. The Asheville, N.C., native has earned two top-10 finishes in just four starts this season driving RCR’s No. 21 Chevrolet, including a seventh-place showing in April at Phoenix International Raceway.

“I’m very excited to work with … the No. 29 team,” Leicht said. “There is a lot of history at Richard Childress Racing, and the team has had a lot of success on the track, including winning the owners championship in 2007. It’s going to be great having Jeff Burton as a teammate. We are going to help each other out as much as possible and go for that owners championship for Richard again.”

The team, which is sponsored by Holiday Inn, won the series owners title last season with Burton and Scott Wimmer. The duo is fourth in those standings this year with one win, five top-five and 15 top-10 finishes.

“Stephen has shown us in just a few races this season that he has the ability to be successful in the Nationwide Series,” said team owner Richard Childress. “He has also helped Clint Bowyer and our No. 2 [Nationwide] team with practice and setups during non-companion events when Clint has been at Cup series tracks and not been able to get in the Nationwide car.

"Teaming him up with Jeff Burton will only speed up his learning curve and help the team compete for the owners championship

Wow, Scott Wimmer helped deliver a championship and not only didn't get a shot at the Cup ride but also lost his Nationwide ride. Getting old (over 25) is killing guys in this sport. Good luck to Leicht, he's got 4 years to secure a solid ride or he'll be out

Congratulations to Stephen! Loved him when he was with Elliott at RYR. I had a feeling this is why they didn't have anything for Wimmer in 2009. Good luck next season.

TO PUT IT VERY PLAIN I THINK THIS STINKS. I HAVE ALWAYS LIKED SCOTT AND NOW HE IS OUT OF A RIDE. I THOUGHT FOR SURE HE WOULD BE RCR 4TH CUP DRIVER. THAT MAN SEEMS LIKE AN ANGLE COMPARED TO MOST OF THE DRIVERS. I HAVE NEVER HEARD A BAD COMMENT OR WORD COME OUT OF THAT MANS MOUTH. ITS JUST SEEMS LIKE ONE OF THE FEW NICE GUYS IN NASCAR. I HOPE SCOTT FINDS A GOOD RIDE FOR NEXT YEAR.

One thing i have learned real fast about nascar is when they want your help and you give them 100% they next day your out on your ear. I really feel bad for Scott. He was right there when rcr needed him but to bring in a kid to take his place really makes my blood boil. Good luck Scott in 2009
