KANSAS CITY, Kan. - Kevin Harvick led the way in Friday's first NASCAR Nationwide Series practice at Kansas Speedway, turning a lap of 167.515 mph in the Kevin Harvick Inc. Chevrolet.
Mark Martin, driving the No. 5 JR Motorsports Chevrolet this weekend, was second at 167.090 followed by Joe Gibbs Racing's Denny Hamlin, who ran a speed of 166.548 in the No. 18 Toyota.
Points leader Clint Bowyer (Richard Childress Racing) and Carl Edwards (Roush Fenway Racing) completed the top five.
Sixth through 10th in speed were Kyle Busch (driving the No. 32 Braun Racing Toyota this weekend), Greg Biffle (Roush Fenway), Matt Kenseth (Roush Fenway), Marcos Ambrose (JTG Daugherty Racing) and Mike Bliss (Phoenix Racing).
The session was slowed just once, for the car of Davis Motorsports' Larry Gunselman, who crashed hard and totaled his Chevrolet.
The team will decide whether Gunselman will attempt to qualify a backup car. A final one-hour practice is scheduled to begin around 4:45 p.m. EDT Friday, followed by qualifying at 10:35 a.m. Saturday and the race at 3:30.
