SPARTA, Ky. – Mixing family with any business is often a difficult task, and the father-son combination of Johnny and Kertus Davis may have found that out.

Kertus Davis has left his dad’s Davis Motorsports Nationwide Series team and will drive the next three races in the series for Jay Robinson Racing, Kertus said Friday at Kentucky Speedway.

Kertus Davis didn’t want to comment further on the split, but Johnny Davis said it was simply time for both to go their own ways.

“I think we were both at a time in our careers where we were kind of stagnant,” Johnny Davis said. “There might have been some better
opportunities for my race team with something else, and there might be some better opportunities for him by himself. As long as we were doing things together, it was kind of like a marriage, and nobody was going to mess with it.”

Kertus has driven for his father for most of his career in NASCAR. Danny Efland and Dwayne Leik are entered in Davis Motorsports’ cars at Kentucky.

Interestingly, the split came the week before Father’s Day.

“I hope our father-son thing is strong – it always has been,” Johnny Davis said. “I hope it stays strong. We don’t have any problems. But I think we both needed to get away from each other to maybe help each other out.”
