DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – NASCAR confiscated the rear decklid and spoiler from JR Motortsports’ No. 5 Nationwide Series Chevrolet driven by Dale Earnhardt Jr. this weekend at Daytona International Speedway.
Nationwide Series Director Joe Balash said Friday that a NASCAR inspector noticed a modification to the spoiler after practice Thursday, and NASCAR put the car aside to check it closer Friday morning.
“By our rule, there can be no aerodynamic modifications to the car once the car’s gone through templates,” Balash said. “In our eye, there’s been a modification to the spoiler, which would enhance the aerodynamics of the car.”
The modification, Balash said, was to help lower the spoiler, which would reduce drag and theoretically increase speed.
The team was allowed to replace the decklid Friday, and Earnhardt Jr. will qualify the car today.
“NASCAR saw something in it they didn’t like and confiscated the decklid,” JR Motorsports Director of Motorsports Steve Crisp said. “Fortunately, we were able to get the car back and change the decklid and go through inspection again.”
Crisp said the team took the backup trunk from the No. 88 JR Motorsports car and used it to replace the confiscated deck lid and spoiler.
"It was a tighter fit – this decklid was [from] a better batch," Crisp said.
Any penalties to the team and crew chief Chad Walter will be announced next week, Balash said.
JR Motorsports merged its Nationwide operations with Hendrick Motorsports for this season, converting all its cars to Hendrick chassis.
