Household coverage rating of Daytona Nationwide race drops 16.7 percent

ESPN’s coverage of last Friday’s Subway Jalapeno 250 NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Daytona International Speedway earned a final household coverage rating of 1.5, down 16.7 percent from the 1.8 earned for the same race last year, the network reported. The race averaged 1,989,233 viewers.

Though down from last year’s rating, the Daytona rating was the highest earned for a Nationwide race on cable since February. The highest cable rating in the months of April, May and June was a 1.4 for the event at Texas Motor Speedway.

Reuters' is has been reporting ratings of 4.7M and higher through the first 9 laps, as Neuenberger made his way though the field until Kerry Earnhardt took him out on Lap 9, either in a fit of jealousy, or generousity, it was at that point that the ratings dipped the 16% and the viewers immediately faded.

Interesting, I looked all over Reuters' website and can't find anything saying that. Considering I am a regular reader of their website, I'd like to think I haven't missed an article.

And the race didn't magically lose 2/3 of their viewers. A 2M person average and they supposedly had 4.7M people for a portion? Yeah, right.

How do they get the ratings anyways? Is there only a certain number of people with a box that tells what they are watching, or is it for EVERYBODY? If its not for everybody with a tv or cable and you have to a certain thing connected to your tv, then I don't think its pretty accurate. Just those people with that special box or whatever has stopped watching it.

And if that's the case...then stop reporting it.

Are you refering to the Neilson rating's? I still don't see how they could have dropped that much overnight either?? I also could'nt find anything at Reuter's! What's up? I think someone is adding a few zero's here!

#4. That's probably what I'm thinking about. But I'm curious...where do they get the ratings from anyhow? Not one article that I have read about nascar ratings has explained that to me.

cable and sat. companies gather the info continuously and sell it for ad purposes. neilson sends questionaires to some families for a week that must be mailed back after completion. they multiply the results by a number of thier chosing and say that's the veiwers. it's not very accurate but it's what is done, it's also how they say what people make, where they live, ect.

Not all of us can watch it on TV. I can't afford 150 channels so that I can watch a few channels with racing on them. I do watch when I'm able to, on streaming video, on the computer. If it's not streaming, or cheap satellite, I don't see it. I know several friends of mine that watch the same way.And some of them watch it on stream, from across the Big Pond. The only way they get to see NASCAR.

what about people in sports bars, like i said it's not right. why do you think golf gets such high ratings, they're playing not watching on sat and sun but the tvs at golf courses are on the channel and they report as if everyone is watching that comes on the coarse. it's skewed to what the corperate bozos want so that's why nascar doesn't care about the core fans anymore and viewership is going DOWN DOWN DOWN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!BTW I KNOW MARKETING STRATEGIES.

Well just put Donnie back in the races and then the ratings will skyrocket again because when Donnie is out there, ANYTHING COULD HAPPEN, and I mean ANYTHING.

The Neilsen ratings are so high when he is in the race because the fans are always on the edge of their seats waiting for him to do another one of his famous flips, nasty wrecks, or simply catch on fire again [the car being on fire, as well as the ratings]

Look at the top 10 of each race. Look at the standings. Nothing but cup drivers ruining the show. No wonder no one watches.

If ESPN took a look at how the Indy cars are shown, maybe there would be viewers. They simply split the screen and show th race and th commercial....seems good to me.
