Great Clips returns to Braun Racing to sponsor Jason Leffler, Kasey Kahne in 2010

Friday, July 03, 2009

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Braun Racing officials announced Friday that sponsor Great Clips will return to the team’s No. 38 NASCAR Nationwide Series Toyota for the next three seasons, and Sprint Cup driver Kasey Kahne will join the team in a part-time role in 2010.

Assuming the 2010 schedule would be 35 races, Kahne will drive the No. 38 in eight races next year with Jason Leffler in the car for the other 27 Nationwide events. Leffler will run for the drivers title by driving Braun’s No. 10 Toyota in the other eight races.

“Jason Leffler and Kasey Kahne are both extremely talented drivers and we are very proud to have them both as representatives of our brand,” Great Clips Inc. Vice President of Marketing Terri Miller said. “We have a great relationship with Jason, who has done an amazing job for us over the last three seasons. His performance this year has given us a lot to brag about and it is exciting that he is still in the championship hunt.

“The return of Kasey to the team adds a unique twist to our program, given that he was the driver to give us our first victory as a primary sponsor in the series. It is time for Nationwide-only team to claim the championship and we intend to be that team.”

Great Clips has been a sponsor in the series since 2000, when it backed Akins Motorsports. Team owner Doug Stringer then hired Kahne in 2003.

In 2006, Stringer merged his team with Braun Racing, putting Leffler in the team’s No. 38 entry.

“We are very pleased with the three-year extension of the Great Clips sponsorship, which will make it one of the longest running sponsors in the industry,” said Stringer, who has a minority ownership role with the team. “We have a great program in place that we feel is going to meet all of Great Clips marketing goals and bring excitement both on and off the race track.”

Man, it feels like forever ago when we last saw Kasey in the #38 Great Clips car!

Even though I'm a Chevy head and only root for Chevy drivers, Kahne in a Toyota in both series next year is going to be great for his career. He can get back to winning multiple races a year. As for Leffler, he just needs to win. He can't keep that ride forever if he's not winning.

It was good to see Kasey back in Nationwide last night! I am glad to see him in the top 10. The double file restart (Shoot out Style) is so fun for us to watch but so dangerous for the drivers! I wish they had not did away with the #9 Nationwide car.
Does anyone know why they did get rid of the # 9 Nationwide car??

The only thing I don't get is, why take Leffler out of the 38? Why not let Kahne just run the the GC sponsorship in the #10?

8 races.... Leffler is one of the best Nationwide regulars (that don't run in Cup) - The best if we aren't counting Keselowski since he runs some Cup races for HMS and Phoenix.

I don't see why Kahne can't be put in the #10.... Braun's 3rd car has had so many drivers that it isn't funny.

Why do we want another "Cup" driver in the NW series? Leffler continues to be one of the highest finishing NW only guys. It all has to do with sponsership. Without those dollars, the car sits. If fans continue to be excited when "Cup" guys are in the NW series, the series will still be searching for its identity.

I think that braun knew what they were doing with getting Kasey to drive those 8 races. They know his record with that car, and I am sure they want to give him that opportunity. I think it is great to see him back in that 38 car too.
GO KASEY PULL OFF A WIN TONIGHT!!

Awesome race last night, Kasey was sort of beaten on by Jason #38 and fell back as far as 21st, but he showed us what he is made of. Top 5 finish....great. Gotta love Kasey and Braun is making a wise choice with him. Also a great BIG THANKS to Great Clips for being a loyal Nascar fan and keeping up with the sponsorship in these hard times. My hat's off to them.

I'm only guessing on these answers that I'm about to give.....so see what you think.

#3 I believe the #9 was owned by Ray Evernham and he is no longer in Nascar racing.

#5 I would think that they are putting him in the #38 because that is where Great Clips wants him and they are also thinking of owners points, which Kasey could help with getting them up there. JMO

Being up there in owners points could help Jason in the long run, especially if they have any rain out qualifying and may even help him (Jason) to contend for the Championship.

Like I said, this is only my thoughts on these things.

Interesting deal, seeing Kahne make the deal now to run a Toyota on Saturday and (for now anyway) a Dodge on Sunday. Plus, he's taking Leffler out of the #38 for a good number of races. The #10 isn't a bad car, but Leffler will likely have to adjust to a new crew and crew chief, and all of the issues that face a team trying to gel together. I'd rather have seen GC sponsor the #10 for 8 races and put Kahne in it and have Leffler run 8 races with a different sponsor. Hell, Braun can seem to find sponsors anytime he needs them, just ask David Reutimann.

#15....Shame on you. How judgemental can you get? And to throw all Kasey's stuff away...what a waste of money and a sure sign of immaturity. You could at least have given them away to someone who would appreciate them and Kasey. If this will be your attitude towards drivers that are in foreign cars.....they don't need you. Right now Toyota is employing more USA citizens than other companies.......BTW how old are you?
    Very young I'm guessing.

    #3 &#5
#3 The nationwide program at the time GEM was folded about 2 seasons ago. The #9 is available to use as far as I am concerned but braun already has the rights to #10 and more owner points. Remember the size of the purse is not only based on where you finish but how long the team as been in existence. So a Brand new team finishing 5th wont get the same money as a team that has been around 10 years finishing 5th in the same race. Braun could transfer the #10 team and points to the #9 but it is not worth the cost to do so for a part time nationwide team.
#5 it would not be cost effective is my best guess. any commercials or pictures they do would have to have both the 10 and 38 cars present instead of just one car. Plus stationary or whatever else that says Great clips racing #38 would have to be changed. the whole business side of the sponsorship must be based on Kahne in the #38. The whole alliance between Braun and the Gillette side of RPM was about Kahne and Sadler running races this year for Braun. I wonder if Sadler will run with Braun next year.

I was glad to see Kasey have a great run in the #10. I've been wanting to see him get in a Toyota ever since JGR switched last year. #15 you need to grow up and realise what manufacturer is employing the most Americans. Also, if you truly cared about Kasey (which a real fan does), you'd want him to have the best possible equipment. I think this will be great for him. All the haters will realise he isn't just here on his looks. #19 I don't look for Sadler to run for Braun at all next year. The indication is that it will be split between Kasey and Leffler.

#15 you are stupid. You can't just do that, just because he is going to drive a Toyota?!? You are crazy, I din't stop liking Stewart, Busch, and Hamlin when they started driving Toyotas, and I certainly won't do that to Kasey, Elliott, Aj, and Reed. I think they will be in Dodges in cup, just not in Nationwide. Shame on #15!
