Goodyear's plan for bigger tire won't impact introduction of new Nationwide car

FONTANA, Calif. – Goodyear’s plan for a bigger tire won’t necessarily alter NASCAR’s phase-in plan for a new model car for the Nationwide Series, series Director Joe Balash says.
NASCAR already has delayed the introduction of the car from sometime this year to at least 2010 or beyond. Now that Goodyear has said it hopes to have a bigger tire ready to race sometime in 2010, that could throw another curve into the introduction of NASCAR’s new Nationwide car since a change in the size of the tire would require teams to change the chassis.
Goodyear says the new tire might be an inch or two taller and wider in order to handle the high right-side loads of the new car, but Balash says the series may move ahead with the new model anyway.
“2010 is too aggressive for anybody to talk about that tire – it will be a much longer process, so I don’t think the introduction of that car and the tire [will match],” Balash said. “We’re well aware of all the processes and the dimensions and those things. We’ve seen a prototype.”
So will the Nationwide Series have a new car in 2010? That introduction remains to be seen.
“We’re going to do our due diligence like we did last year,” Balash said. “We’re going to take the next few weeks and spend a lot of time with the owners and get a good feel on how they feel for the car, and then we’ll go back to senior management and make a recommendation on our comfort level with 2010 and the launch.
“Either way, the project is going to get done.”

Feb 20, 2009 at 10:35 AMGoodyear has a hostage not captive market in NASCAR. No matter what they do, or how good or badly they do, there is NOTHING anyone can do about about their results! The teams can complement or complain, it makes no difference! To Goodyear , less talk, more action!!

Feb 20, 2009 at 4:26 PMAs much as I think Goodyear is doing a crappy job, I am wondering why the Roush Fords didn't have a tire problem at Daytona?

Feb 20, 2009 at 5:45 PMI don't think a bigger tire is the answer. I think a better tire might do the trick, but it's Goodyear we are talking about. I just don't think they can make one. If they could make a better tire, don't you think they would?

Feb 20, 2009 at 6:14 PMi'm thinking a smaller motor would be better...slow these cars down a bit so they turn in the corners instead of slide thru the corners...as spectators we wouldn't notice the difference in speeds unless they told us...

Feb 21, 2009 at 9:59 AMI give Goodyear alot of credit here for trying to do something to illiminate some of the problems they have with the current tire. I can tell from reading some of the post already that people just like bashing. Quite listening to whiners like Tony and realize Goodyear is a company with a reputation to protect and a new tire would help that a lot. Think about it. A bigger tire means less heat build up, more surface for more grip meaning better track performance and feel, and the larger tire will take more front end force loads that these COT"S are putting on them. So give Goodyear and NASCAR both some credit for at least trying to keep up and ahead of problems. Most good changes take time, and patience and race fans seem not to have much of the latter.

Feb 21, 2009 at 10:03 AMOh and about the Roush cars not having trouble. That's camber and set up,nothing to do with ownership. But isn't it funny how when a Roush car leads one lap we call a rain shortened race? I couldn't understand on a lighted track calling the race that early. The rain stopped shortly after the call, and the track could have been dried and had time to run more laps before curfew. Guess NASCAR figured they owed Roush a win?

Feb 21, 2009 at 2:02 PMTim, it is about ownership. Whoever did the cambers and set ups on those cars did a better job than some others.
