WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. – Dario Franchitti earned his first career pole in NASCAR by qualifying first Saturday for the Zippo 200 Nationwide Series race at Watkins Glen International.

Franchitti put Chip Ganassi Racing’s No. 40 Dodge on the pole with a fast lap of 121.327 mph around The Glen’s 2.45-mile road course. Franchitti edged Robby Gordon for the top spot, as Gordon went 120.693 in his own Robby Gordon Motorsports Dodge.

Jimmie Johnson, making a rare Nationwide start for JR Motorsports, qualified third, with Denny Hamlin (Braun Racing) fourth and Brad Keselowski (JRM) fifth.

Kevin Harvick (Kevin Harvick Inc.) was sixth, followed by Kyle Busch (D’Hondt Motorsports), Sam Hornish Jr. (Penske Racing), Ryan Newman (Fitz Motorsports) and Max Papis (Rusty Wallace Racing).

Five drivers failed to qualify: Larry Gunselman (Davis Motorsports), Derrike Cope (Jay Robinson Racing), Kenny Hendrick (Stanton Barrett Motorsports), Burney Lamar (Day Enterprises Racing) and Alex Garcia (Transnet Racing).

Saturday’s 200-lap race is slated to take the green flag shortly after 3 p.m. EDT.
