DARLINGTON, S.C. – Denny Hamlin’s bid for his third consecutive Nationwide Series victory at Darlington Raceway ended before the Diamond Hill Plywood 200 could begin.
Hamlin crashed his Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota on his first qualifying lap Friday, and because his No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing team is not eligible for a guaranteed starting spot, he failed to qualify.
Carl Edwards won the pole for Friday night’s race with a track-record lap of 176.994 mph in the No. 60 Roush Fenway Racing Ford. His lap was more than a second faster than Ryan Newman’s seven-year-old record of 170.301.
Clint Bowyer (Richard Childress Racing) was second at 175.974 mph, with Tony Stewart (JGR) third at 175.892. In all, 27 drivers were above Newman’s old record in the first Nationwide race since the 1.366-mile track was repaved.
David Stremme (Rusty Wallace Racing) was fourth, with Kyle Busch (Braun Racing) fifth. Sixth through 10th were Jeff Burton (RCR), Mike Bliss (Phoenix Racing) , Matt Kenseth (Roush Fenway Racing), David Ragan (Roush Fenway) and Kelly Bires (JTG Racing).
Brett Rowe (Day Enterprises Racing) was the other driver to fail to qualify.
