Dale Earnhardt Jr. says JR Motorsports lacks budget for Nationwide COT

By Lee Montgomery - Associate Editor
Friday, July 03, 2009

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – NASCAR Nationwide Series team co-owner Dale Earnhardt Jr. said Friday he doesn’t know what the series’ new car will look like in 2010 and that his JR Motorsports team doesn’t have enough money in its current budget to pay for development of the car of tomorrow.

Earnhardt Jr., who co-owns JRM with Rick Hendrick, fields one full-time and part-time entry in the Nationwide Series. NASCAR appears to be leaning toward running the new car on restrictor-plate tracks and road courses in 2010.

“I haven’t had any conversations with anyone in the sport about the car," Earnhardt Jr. said before Friday night’s Subway Jalapeno 250. “I haven’t had any diagrams or ideas or drafts in front of me to look at. So I am just waiting in the wings like everybody else, I assume.”

Richard Childress Racing did the initial development work on the Nationwide COT for Chevrolet. The rule book is close to being finalized on the car, but NASCAR is still talking with teams about the implementation schedule.

“We have our budget worked out to where we can run this year with what we have, but we don’t have the money to develop this car,” Earnhardt Jr. said. “You’d be lucky to be able to do it just under $150,000 in just an early- or preseason development. So before you even run a race, you have spent a couple hundred thousand dollars, and we do not have that as a company.”

Like a lot of teams, JRM is simply waiting on the final rule book before building any new cars.

“Without a doubt, I am sure it will be a safer race car,” Earnhardt Jr. said. “Hopefully, we have learned a lot from what we have done the last three years from the Cup level to make a better race car than we have now in the Nationwide Series.”

But Earnhardt Jr. wondered if that was possible, saying the current Nationwide car is “the ultimate race car.”

“Brad Keselowski had a good analogy the other day,” Earnhardt Jr. said of his Nationwide driver. “He said, ‘If I look at the Nationwide Series car I would brag to my friends and show it off to them.’ And he said he wants to be able to do that with the new car as well and he wants to be excited about the way it looks and how it drives, and so I feel like hopefully they will develop a new car that will be exciting and fun to watch.”

It's like he's been saying for over a year: If the NW series went to a COT, going to Cup would be just as easy, and more likely to get him the sponsorship he needs to build the COTs necessary. It's also a more financially appealing to a team. You can build the NW COT for $150,000 and make $25,000 a race with it, or you can build a Cup COT for about $200,000 and make $70,000 a race. It's a bit more expensive initially, but has a much better financial kickback.

Plus, Jr could get someone like Bill Elliott or Terry Labonte to qualify his car for a couple races to guarantee the starting spot for say the first 5 races, and then get Brad Keselowski in the car the rest of the time. He'd at least be locked in to the Top 35 (likely) that way, and wouldn't have to sweat out qualifying every week.

JRM going to Cup wouldn't surprise me a bit. The NW COT is extremely cost-prohibitive, just ask Johnny Davis who built one at his shop as an independent team owner.

Dale, Jr. sure has the money to retire if he wanted to.. I don't think he will though! He's just getting started again! His career has already brought in $22 million dollars from endorsements alone in 2009! You should read up on him some time! I am looking forward to the race tomorrow! Hopefully, he won't get caught up in another wreck! GO JR. GO!!!!!!! BTW out of the top 50 athlete's making the most money, only two NASCAR driver's are in it....that would be Dale, Jr. in 11th. and Jeff Gordan around 20th or some where close to that! Impressive huh!!!!

Rick Hendrick already said he wanted to cut in NW Series. He also said Brad wanted to be a part of Hendrick. Dale, Jr. said the money wasn't there in NW for the COT.. Jr. also said he hasn't talked to anyone about the car or looked at any drafts, ideas, or diagrams. It's a wait and see right now. There are so many options right now and a whole lot to think and plan about. I just hope it turns out for the best for Brad and Jr.

If Jr says he doesn't have the money to develop the new Nationwide car, where is he going to get the money to move to CUP? He will have to buy out Hendrick first, JR Motorsports is part owned by Rick Hendrick and cannot move to CUP as long as he is an owner (due to the 4 team rule). Then, Jr will have to buy new cars, motors and make payroll for the entire team. I think he's got the money, if he wants to spend it all starting a team. He will just have to decide what's best for him. IMO

One of the option's are like you said KBFANINGA, to buy out Hendrick, move to Cup and start his own team. The money he was talking about was what they have that they can speed in the budget account of JRM. They are other options as well, like SHR putting Brad on that team. Brad needs to move to cup in my opinion and I would like to see Brad move to cup with Jr. Dale, Jr. could get someone else to join up with him as a co-owner as well. What ever is best all the way around is what needs to be done. If Jr. doesn't know and Hendrick doesn't know. I sure don't know. lol

#19, Jr buying out Hendrick's NW share is about as easy as buying a pack of gum. Hendrick's share is really just a formality. Hendrick's wanted to get out of NW for a while, hence why he merged with JRM when Jr came to HMS in 2008.

Junior moving to Cup would be a much better decision financially. He'd still have to spend tons of money, but at least for each race his team makes he'd be able to get a much better return on his investment. Plus, he wouldn't really be starting a new team, just getting the parts to run that team and the sponsorship. He can get the sponsorship, even if it's not for $20M a year but is for only $12-14M.

Why spend the money developing NW COT cars when the Cup car is developed and you can simply build or buy one? You can start and park a Cup car and make almost as much as you do finishing near the front or winning a NW race. I don't understand why anyone would spend the money needed for a COT for the NW series.

Buying out Hendrick in the cup series?! Oh yeah, like Rick is going to sell his team that has been his baby since 1984, PUH-LEASE! That'll be a cold day in Hell. Rick isn't just going to roll over for Junior and sell him his busniess and teams, because he's the most popular and richest driver in nascar. I'm sorry but Junior is not all that and a bag of chips and I'm tired of most of his fans thinking that. Now don't get me wrong because I have a number of friends who are junior fans and some of them I consider to be my best friends. But they don't even think that buying out Hendrick is an option. First and foremost they want Junior to start having better races and be more competitive and want him back in the chase. One even thinks ever since he started his own teams and such was a mistake because since then, he started fading in competition.

As for money....if Junior is one of the highest paid athelets or is VERY rich, then he should dub into his own money. How do you think Kevin Harvick, Inc started? Uh....with Kevin (and Delana) money. Sounds to me Junior doesn't want to spend his own money, and in this sport you have to spend your money for your teams to get someone. Ask Rick Hendrick, Richard Childress, Roger Penske, Jack Roush. They all started their teams with their own money and it paid off. Junior needs to make an investment, if he really wants to continue being a team owner. Yes sponsorship helps ALOT, but you have to give a little bit of your own first, because you need to be able to buy all the stuff and pay the people you need to while getting ready and hoping to find a sponsor.

Brad was interviewed on Nascar Now. He commented of sponsors. It will be necessary to have sponsors.
My question: if sponsors are not available for Brad will he drive for JRMotorsports 2010?
I have read comments of Brad has driven in the Nationwide series for whatever number of years.
If he doesn't drive in the cup series full time, is all hope lost?

your all mixed up. Dale sold half of JRM to HMS when he signed with Rick. So now they own the #5, #48, and the #88 in the NW series. If JRM wants to field Brad in the Cup series he has to sell HMS share back to Rick. The 4 car cap wont allow HMS to own any part of JRM.

Actually, MSP, they merged together at the start of 2008. JRM and HMS in NW are the same team, which is why Hendrick is the listed owner of the #5. If JRM moves to Cup, Dale just has to 'buy' Hendrick's share of the company, which isn't going to be too hard- Hendrick gets an additional car in Cup, and JRM gets the Cup sponsorships and winnings; everybody wins.

As for what happens if he can't get a ride at Hendrick, that's really a mystery. Gibbs is looking to start a 4th team, Truex is bolting from EGR, and RPM has 2 pretty sub-par drivers in its fleet that could be dropped. Plus, he's already been courted by Penske for the #12 ride. Brad is one of those drivers that if sponsorship was no issue, he'd be a full-time driver right now. But to put him in a car is at least $15M a year (probably more like $18-21M for a Hendrick car) and few companies are willing to pony that up for a rookie driver.

Hendrick has to buy back what he paid Jr to keep him afloat for the past year or so.
