Cup plans for 2010 on hold at Rusty Wallace Racing
SPARTA, Ky. – Rusty Wallace Racing’s plans to move to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series in 2010 are on hold, as Wallace said Friday at Kentucky Speedway that his two-car team will remain in the Nationwide Series next year.
Wallace had wanted to move drivers Steve Wallace and Brendan Gaughan to Cup for next season but realized he couldn’t pull it off.
“That’s totally on hold right now,” Wallace said. “We have totally made a decision to go Nationwide racing with Brendan and Stephen next year. …
“My goal is still to get in Cup, but not now. Too much weird [stuff] is happening with this economy. Our Nationwide cars are funded real well. I’m happy with that. It’d be too much for me to bite off [to move to Cup].”
Wallace said he is working on a deal to get son Steve as many as 10 Sprint Cup races next season, pending sponsorship.
“There’s a good chance I can pull that off,” Wallace said. “Then I’d want to partner with an existing Cup team that already has points. Maybe they could run 26 and we could run 10.”
RWR currently fields Chevrolets in the Nationwide Series, but that relationship is up in the air because the manufacturer is pulling out of the series after this season.
When asked if he would stay with Chevy next year, Wallace said it’s “too early to say.”
“I don’t want to be with a company that’s not going to support me, I’ll tell you that right now,” Wallace said. “I want to be with racers. Right now, they’re with me. I have not got a phone call and I’m feeling pretty proud right now. But I’m not happy with what I’m hearing they’re doing around the world, hiding behind this bankruptcy, canceling everybody’s contracts and saying, ‘Sorry, man.’”
