HOMESTEAD, Fla. – Clint Bowyer’s 56-point cushion entering the season-ending Ford 300 at Homestead-Miami Speedway was enough for him to capture his first NASCAR national touring series crown Saturday night.

Bowyer clinched the NASCAR Nationwide Series title with a fifth-place finish, which allowed him to end the year 21 points ahead of defending series champion Carl Edwards.

“It’s just incredible,” Bowyer said. “I’m so excited for everybody."

Edwards won the race, his seventh win of the season, but the Roush Fenway Racing driver couldn’t do enough to catch Richard Childress Racing’s Bowyer.

"That's a great win, to hold off the 18 [of Kyle Busch] as strong as he's been all season," said Edwards, who congratulated Bowyer on his championship. "If I've got to get beat by somebody, a dirt racer from [Bowyer hometown] Emporia, Kansas, is one of the best.

"But we'll be back next year, and I hope Clint will, too. There's no shame in giving 100 percent and finishing second. That's all we could do."

Bowyer won the title with 29 top-10 finishes in the 35 races, which compensated for his winning only one race on the way to the title. He finished in the top five Saturday by holding on to fifth over a final four-lap dash to the finish following a late caution.

"We always have to go through that last scare before the glory," Bowyer said. "That's what championships are made out of."

While Bowyer won the title, his team didn’t win the owners championship. That went to the No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing team, which got a 10th-place finish from Joey Logano to beat Bowyer’s team by 12 points.

The No. 20 team used several drivers this year. Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin, Tony Stewart and Logano have all driven the car.

JR Motorsports’ Landon Cassill was crowned as the Raybestos Rookie of the Year.

The top 10 drivers will attend the series awards banquet next Saturday. Following Bowyer and Edwards in the standings were Brad Keselowski (338 points behind Bowyer), David Ragan (-607), Mike Bliss (-614), Kyle Busch (-671), David Reutimann (-744), Mike Wallace (-1,004), Jason Leffler (-1,046) and Marcos Ambrose (-1,141).

Congrats Clint. This last race wasn't an easy race-they made you work for this. I agree with 5 - at least Kyle Bush didn't win - he didn't get to make history. He was his usual self after the race - pouting like a little baby!!! Where was his famour bow?????

There is always one bad apple in the bunch, the one with the "worm" in it!!!!!!!!!!!!! Always has to rain on someones parade. Talk about whining, how bout your boy KB, never gives an interview when things don't go his way, always storms to the bus or hauler. If you don't like Clint, why did you listen to his speeech and why comment on his win. Talk about whining Wormy.

Nice try Carl, but I think this Sprint Cup is going to go down the same way as Nationwide. Awesome job as of late, too bad those Fords couldn't be as dominant earlier when the Toyotas were strong. Good job to the 20 car and JGR. Unlike most who hate you for Magnetgate, to set up a car that has been as dominate as the 20, to have four different drivers not only compete but to win in that car, that has to be special. Too bad Dave Rodgers pretty much took the fall because he is a good crew chief. I was hoping Tony would tap him to move to SHR.

So a "BIG LEAGUE" driver wins the "Little League" title - - GEE ! WOW !!! Who could have expected THAT !!!! Can a local go-kart Championship be far behind for those Cup teams who need the adulation ?????? When I beat up MY baby brother -I felt badly . . . .

You are totally awesome, Clint! Your hometown's proud of you! Was really glad KB didn't get to make his "history", such an arrogant, fluttery eyed Gomer! And, Wormie, who's crying now??

I'm sorry...but I stil don't think a full-time Cup driver should be in the points race for the NationWide title....Yeah...let them race....But no points and less(or no) money....Let the guys trying to make it to next level have the playing field...This was a farce to me again...2nd year in a row, too....

Waaaa get over it the negative folks.....he DESERVES to be the Champion.....Full time cup or not.....why should he NOT get a chance to be a Champion.............he raced his heart out all year...more than those Half timers did....a Champion in my view excels in both!!!!!!!!

Congrats to Clint Bowyer. I'm ok with full time cup drivers racing in the Nationwide Series if they do it full time. I don't like seeing Cup guys race 8 or 10 races of the year. It screws up what going on in the series. Once again, congrats to Clint Bowyer, he deserves the championship. racingnewsdigest.com

If you run the series full time, you should be able to win the trophy. Things are different now than they were 10 years ago, and Clint needs the seat time. Good job RCR, you needed this championship, and Clint, good luck to you for winning and making the chase. You naysayers should get a life. And please learn how to spell!
