WEST ALLIS, Wis. – JR Motorsports driver Landon Cassill returned home to Cedar Rapids, Iowa after last week’s Nationwide Series race and was stunned to see the devastation caused by recent flooding in the Midwest.
Cassill said he went to Cedar Rapids after the race at Kentucky Speedway and spent several days working and visiting friends. His family was spared any flooding, though he said an aunt and uncle had some greenhouses that were flooded.
“It’s hard to put into words,” Cassill said. “It’s really devastating. They evacuated 10,000 people in downtown Cedar Rapids. To go there and look at the city I grew up in, and to see the Dairy Queen that I used tp go to as a kid flooded to the rooftop with water and see street signs and lights washed away – there’s no green grass in downtown Cedar Rapids anymore. It’s all brown. There’s dirt on the streets.
“You can’t even imagine what it’s like. It’s unbelievable.”
Cassill said his father’s car dealership also avoided any damage. He said he was proud to see the work done by his sponsor, the National Guard.
“The National Guard was there helping out a lot,” Cassill said. “They were evacuating people from their homes, taking care of the street, taking care of the state.”
