Gillett Evernham Motorsports' Patrick Carpentier returns to the Nationwide Series this weekend, driving the team’s No. 9 entry in the Corona Mexico 200 at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.
Carpentier, a rookie in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, will be making his fourth start in the Nationwide ranks and his second on a road
course. His first road-course race in the series cam last season in Montreal, where he started from the pole and finished second.
The Canadian driver is a veteran of road-course racing after his years of competing in the open-wheel ranks.
“I have always been a fan of road-course racing,” he said. “From all my years in CART and IRL and Champ Car I’ve done a lot of laps on road courses, and experience helps in that type of racing. I’m just hoping my experience pays off.”
He says that he hasn’t raced in Mexico in about four years, but that he still remembers the track quite well. He knows some of the technical aspects of the road course and what his car needs to handle them.
He also looks forward to racing in front of the Mexico City fans once more.
“That track is a lot of fun,” he said. “The atmosphere, the people make it great, and the fans are always excited to see us race there. I look
forward to it because everyone is so nice, and they make it a really enjoyable experience. Plus the hotel that we stay at is one of my favorites.”
