MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Rusty Wallace Racing’s Brendan Gaughan was in the lead with 23 laps to go in the Kroger On Track For The Cure 250 at Memphis Motorsports Park and appeared to be heading to his first career NASCAR Nationwide Series victory.

But a piece of debris on the track ruined it.

“I saw the debris come off, and I was screaming, ‘Maybe nobody will notice!’” Gaughan said. “That’s part of racing.”

Under the resulting caution, Gaughan and other frontrunners pitted, but Gaughan’s stop was slower, and he was the fourth car off pit road. Still, he was happy with a top-five finish.

“With some of the bad luck we’ve had this year, coming home in fifth, that’s good for the rookie points, that’s good for the whole deal,” Gaughan said. “I’m pretty darn happy right now.”

“Both Rusty Wallace cars were awesome today. We passed the whole field. We went from 21st to first [on a green-flag run], and it was just unbelievable. It’s so much fun when you’ve got great equipment.”

And that’s from a driver who doesn’t care for short-track racing.

“I don’t,” Gaughan said. “Didn’t mean I couldn’t drive ‘em. Just said I don’t like ‘em.”
