MEXICO CITY – Colin Braun has been on a pole before in Mexico, so could he get one today in qualifying for the Corona Mexico 200 at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez?
Well, Braun got his pole in the Grand-American Rolex Sports Car Series last year here. And he really can’t afford to go for the pole in his Nationwide car because he must qualify for the race on speed as his Roush Fenway Racing car has not competed in all the events this year.
“We have to qualify our way in the race, so I don’t think we can be too wild on the first lap in qualifying, and I think you’re going to get
it done in the first lap,” Braun said. “I don’t think we will be [on the pole], but I hope we’re a good, solid top-10.”
Qualifying begins at 11:35 a.m. EDT today. It will not be the traditional two-lap qualifying session. Drivers will be divided into groups
of six based on practice speed, and each group will have six minutes on the track with a staggered start. A driver’s best lap will be his qualifying lap.
The 19-year-old Braun was third quickest in the first practice and second quickest in the final practice Friday.
He calls the 2.518-mile road course one of his favorite race tracks.
“You’ve got to get it to turn and put the power down well and that’s something the guys worked really hard on today and our car does really well,” Braun said. “I think we’re quite good on old tires and I feel like we’ll be pretty good this weekend.”
