Bobby Hillin Jr. back on track after eight-year hiatus
KANSAS CITY, Kan. - Bobby Hillin Jr. hasn’t competed in NASCAR since August 26 - in the year 2000 - but there he was Saturday driving the MacDonald Motorsports car in Nationwide Series qualifying.
Hillin, who has 334 career Cup starts in a career that spanned from 1982-2000, is substituting for D.J. Kennington, who is competing in the final race of the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series.
“It’s a lot of fun,” the 44-year-old Hillin said. “I’ve still got a lot of getting up to speed with it, but it’s a lot of fun. It really makes me realize
why I raced for so many years. I like being in the car.”
Hillin said he might run a couple of more races this year. He has a business, an industrial service company, that he has been spending his time with in recent years.
So what’s the biggest difference in the cars after eight years?
“They drive more like go-karts or IndyCars,” said Hillin, who has 113 career starts in what is now known as the Nationwide Series. “There is less movement in the cars, and that’s what I’m trying to get a feel for right now.”
