A foreign experience: Dario Franchitti leaves open-wheel stardom behind

Dario Franchitti could be in the ice cream business, although it’s difficult to imagine him slinging a scoop and wearing one of those goofy hats. Fortunately for him – and for racing in general – Franchitti’s father, George, was a racer in addition to an ice cream maker. Franchitti’s, the family’s ice cream business, enabled George and Marina, Dario’s mother, to live a middle-class existence in Scotland. Racing was a hobby for George, who dabbled in Formula Ford and Formula Atlantic racing.

Franchitti to drive Ganassi's No. 40 Dodge in '08

CONCORD, N.C. - Chip Ganassi Racing officials announced Wednesday that Indy Racing League champion and reigning Indianapolis 500 winner Dario Franchitti has signed a multiyear contract to drive the No. 40 Dodge full time in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series beginning in 2008.

CONCORD, N.C. - Never has the reigning Indianapolis 500 champion made a switch to NASCAR, and Dario Franchitti admits he has thought about not being able to defend racing's biggest crown.
