2008 Despite finishing 34th in the final series standings, Smith finished all 34 starts he made...His best finish of the season was 14th in the sprint race at Martinsville Speedway...Lost his ride at Dale Earnhardt Inc. at the end of the season.

2007 Shared the No. 01 Ginn Racing Chevrolet with Mark Martin. In June, the team announced that Smith would take over the No. 14 from Sterling Marlin on a full-time basis. Less than a week later, before he had raced, the team merged with DEI and the car's owner points transferred to the No. 15 of Paul Menard, leaving Smith's future unclear. He later signed with DEI to drive the No. 01 for the full 2008 season. … He competed in seven races over the course of the season, finishing 50th in the standings.
