2008 Jarrett will run the first five points races, the Shootout and the all-star race before retiring. Teammate David Reutimann will take over the car at that point. 

2007 Jarrett joined the new Michael Waltrip Racing team, gambling on a new group. That strategy became more difficult when NASCAR altered the past champions provisional rule in the offseason, allowing a driver to use just six over the course of the year. With a new team, Jarrett was outside the top 35 in owners points and missed races after using his provisionals. He never broke into that top 35 group, finishing the season 41st in the drivers standings with eight DNFs in 24 starts … Late in the year, he announced his plans to retire early in the 2008 season.
