Welcome back, Road America
There was a bit of good news from the Nationwide Series this week. Road America will be on the 2010 schedule.
The Elkhart Lake, Wis. road course will replace the Milwaukee Mile in NASCAR’s No. 2 series next season.
Milwaukee is not a track NASCAR was looking to abandon, but continuing operational difficulties there made returning problematic. Road America is a good – indeed, a superb – replacement.
The 4-mile track is perhaps the best road course in the United States not already hosting a NASCAR event. Road Atlanta in Georgia also has a fine layout, but its proximity to tracks already running NASCAR races is a major hurdle.
Road America has a great location in rural Wisconsin, and its course is challenging enough to test even the best NASCAR road racers. And adding a third road-course event – along with Watkins Glen, N.Y. and Montreal – to the Nationwide schedule makes for a good fit.
Road America has not hosted a NASCAR national series event since 1956. It’s past time.
