Release hall vote totals

The powers-that-be at the NASCAR Hall of Fame seem to have patterned much of their style and business after the Baseball Hall of Fame, and that’s a good thing.

The baseball hall is easily the best major sports hall of fame in the country, and its method of selecting members is mostly respected.

The NASCAR hall – or NASCAR itself, which is making this call – should take the next step in following baseball and release the vote totals from what will be an annual selection process for hall membership.

This is not to suggest that any chicanery was involved in Wednesday’s selection of the NASCAR hall’s first five members. There was an extensive discussion process involving the voters before the choices were made, and everybody apparently had a chance for input before the vote.

Knowing the numbers, however, would be interesting. Not essential, but interesting. It’s always fun to know how one candidate fared versus another, and it would be interesting to know how close those who weren’t chosen came to making it. Additionally, it would be educational to follow candidates’ totals from year to year to see how their chances might improve or fade with time.

How did the vote totals for Bill France Sr. and Bill France Jr. compare? Was Richard Petty’s total significantly higher than Dale Earnhardt’s?

Give us the fan vote totals, too.

Transparency is always best in situations like these.
