This weekend’s NASCAR Sprint Cup race Talladega Superspeedway is the one the 12 drivers in the Chase For The Sprint Cup  have been dreading. Why? Because the racing at the 2.66-mile facility is truly unpredictable, especially with the advent of the new model Cup car.

Tier 1
Dale Earnhardt Jr.

He has to snap out of his slump sometime, doesn’t he? Once the master of Talladega, he hasn’t won there since 2004. But Earnhardt Jr. does have five victories at the track and was second there in April. He’s always a threat at the restrictor-plate tracks and should run well again this weekend.

Tier 2
Casey Mears

There have been four races with what used to be known as the car of tomorrow at Talladega, and Mears has scored the most points of all drivers. He has only led four laps and doesn’t have a top-five finish in those four events, but he does have two top-10s and has been running at the finish of all four. Plus, Mears is the only driver to finish on the lead lap of all four COT races.

Tier 3

Paul Menard

He’s eighth in points in the four COT races, and that’s including a 38th-place finish. But since then, he’s been 14th, second and 13th, and that’s tops in this category.
