Talladega could shake up Chase standings

Many drivers in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series refer to this weekend’s race at Talladega Superspeedway as a “wild card.” I sure hope so.

A lot of fans have given up hope on a close championship battle this year, and who could blame them? Hendrick Motorsports driver Jimmie Johnson has made a mockery of the Chase For The Sprint Cup the last three years and appears to be doing it again this season.

And a lot of fans don’t like – and that‘s a soft word – Johnson’s dominance, so for their sake I hope Talladega is a wild card.

But as I write that, I remember that Talladega can be a dangerous track. Remember Carl Edwards in April? I hope you don’t want the same fate for Johnson.

Yet, the way things are going, the only way for a close title fight is for Johnson to screw up. Has it really come to that?

So maybe something wild will happen at Talladega this weekend. But I hope it isn’t too wild, for Johnson’s sake.

Be careful what you wish for.
