Time for Martin to have fun

February 11 2008

Mark Martin sure was in a good mood this week. And you know what? Good for him.

After 19 years in the championship pressure cooker, it’s time for Martin to take a step back and smell the roses, enjoy the good life, get away from it all and [insert your favorite cliché here].

Martin, who said he still thinks of himself as No. 6, is in Daytona testing a car for Ginn Racing. And he’s wearing a Chevrolet patch on his driving suit, in case you blue-oval lovers didn’t notice.

But so what? Let the man enjoy his championship retirement. He sure is. Martin joked Tuesday about “breaking all the rules in ’07,” and he wasn’t talking about failing inspection. He was talking about driving a Chevy for Ginn in Cup, maybe driving one for Hendrick Motorsports in Busch, driving a Ford for Roush Racing in Busch and driving a Ford for the Wood Brothers in trucks.

He also sounded excited about his role with Ginn, the former MB2 Motorsports team that has made big changes since Bobby Ginn bought the team last year.

Martin is at Ginn for the long term, hoping to match his tenure at Roush, which lasted 19 years.
He might be driving a truck for Ginn in 19 years, Martin said.

No, not that truck. The team transporter, Martin joked.

But if he wants to drive on a race track in 19 years, why not? Isn’t this supposed to be about fun?

For Martin, that’s what it’s about now.
