While one career continues, another one stalls due to downturn

April 11 2009

This week produced mixed fortunes for two drivers who could share the nickname Double A.

Aric Almirola and AJ Allmendinger are both young talents trying to cement their futures as drivers at NASCAR’s highest level. Their ongoing quests to do so will now come from very different vantage points.

Allmendinger received another lifeline with an extension of his schedule to 26 races this year. Conversely, Almirola finds himself on the sidelines now – shelved by a lack of sponsorship.

The most valuable people in the sport today may be those wielding briefcases. The executives who can coax dollars out of sponsors – as Richard Petty Motorsports officials did in securing an additional six races with backing from Hunt Brothers Pizza for Allmendinger – are directly responsible for allowing talent to develop.

Drivers, of course, through their performance have a say in attracting funds. Allmendinger is 20th in points after seven races while Almirola is 37th. Notwithstanding that disparity, if we were in a better economic climate, Almirola would have the luxury of more time to find his way. His potential was clearly on display during previous stints with Joe Gibbs

Racing and Dale Earnhardt Inc. A tough start to the 2009 season with Earnhardt Ganassi Racing is but that. Unfortunately, Almirola is no longer in control of his progression.

Before he can take the wheel again, and have the chance to steer his career to greater heights, Almirola will depend first on the sales force at Earnhardt Ganassi Racing.

Clearly, it’s not an easy time to be in sales. So Almirola may find himself in a holding pattern for quite some time. Like talented individuals in a variety of fields, he could become yet another casualty of the economic downturn.

For his sake, and others out there looking to regain their footing, let’s hope not.
