On the Loose Side
A NASCAR BLOG BY Kenny Bruce
From the desert to ’Dega
• I know folks are still saying there’s not enough action in NASCAR’s Sprint Cup Series, but there have been six different winners in the first eight races. Hard to argue with that. ...
• He’s obviously a rookie: Remember when drivers could be spotted standing behind their haulers, chatting with fans and signing autographs? Seems as if that doesn’t happen anymore, right? Well, not unless you’re Joey Logano. Some 20 minutes before making his way to driver introductions at Phoenix, the Joe Gibbs Racing driver eased out of his team’s hauler, mingled with fans and signed several autographs. Someone better set him straight before he ruins it for everyone. ...
• Refresher course: With the Cup folks heading to Talladega this week, it’s worth noting that the top five finishers in the season’s first
restrictor-plate race, at Daytona, were: Matt Kenseth, Kevin Harvick, AJ Allmendinger, Clint Bowyer and Elliott Sadler. Place your wagers
accordingly. ...
• Speaking of Talladega: Yates Racing won its first race at the 2.66-mile track, with Davey Allison taking the checkered flag in the 1989
spring race. The team’s most recent victory, No. 57, also came there, courtesy of Dale Jarrett in the 2005 fall race. Both drivers qualified
second.

Apr 21, 2009 at 5:49 PMSix winners in the first eight races is not bad. But it's not enough, either. Mark Martin's win was the first comeback win the sport has seen since Jeff Burton broke through in 2006. Again, it's good, but nowhere near enough. If Allmendinger and the #44 win Talladega - a good bet the way he and the Petty #44 have run on the plate tracks - that will do even more to restore the sport's thrill; if Brian Vickers wins with the Mateschitz team that will do still more on that front. ---- David Larison - Bruce was talking about Yates Racing's first win as an independent team - Davey's 1987 and 1988 wins were with Harry and Lorin Ranier as car owners; Robert Yates bought the team from them after the 1988 season.
