Food for thought heading to Darlington

May 8 2009

Race fans, media folks and members of race teams have at least one thing in common when they travel to races each weekend: They all have to eat.

Somewhere. At some point in time.

With that in mind, I’m going to throw out a few places fans might or might not know about in and around Darlington where good meals can be found.

Google each of them for directions. And enjoy.

1. Red Bone Alley: Get the Low Country Shrimp and Grits. And thank me later.

2. Percy & Willie’s: I can never get past the steak on the menu. And it has never disappointed.

3. Juan Jose Mexican Restaurant. They serve large, ice-cold pitchers of ... uh, refreshments. Standard south-of-the-border fare, but always worth a stop.

4. Raceway Grill: Don’t want to stray too far from the track? Not a problem. Raceway Grill is located in front of the track, just off Turn 2. Lots of interesting racing stuff on the walls. And you won’t leave hungry.

OK, besides getting a good meal, those four restaurants also provide a decent opportunity for a fan to run up on a driver, crew chief or team owner. Or maybe all three. Can’t count the number of times I’ve been in one of those places and saw someone from the Cup or Nationwide series enjoying themselves.

There are other restaurants in the Florence/Darlington area worth stopping for a meal. But hey, it’s only a two-day show. Maybe next time I’ll tell you about the best chicken pie you’ll ever eat.
