Here's to hoping Chase ends at Phoenix
FORT WORTH, Texas – I've spent the entire Chase hoping anyone but Jimmie Johnson would win this year's title.
Nothing against the guy, but I have felt all season that anyone winning four straight championships would be bad for NASCAR. Just like in any pro sport, it gets old when one team dominates.
But in a strange way, I’d now be disappointed if Johnson didn’t win the title.
The reason is this: He’s been so dominant and incredible during this Chase, it would simply seem wrong if some horrible misfortune ruined his chances now. Johnson and his team are the best, so they deserve to win it.
Even Kyle Busch, probably the last person you’d expect, seems to be pulling for Johnson now.
“I always bring up his name probably in about every interview, but you have to idolize the guy,” Busch said Saturday. “Who can win four straight titles in this type of era? Not even Jeff Gordon could do it. It’s a big deal.”
He’s right. And so though I still think it hurts the sport to have the same guy win every season – blunting fan interest in the Chase – I’m hoping Johnson finishes it off strong and clinches at Phoenix.
It would be a fitting end to his four straight titles.
