Odds are, Roush Fenway Racing has championship team
Roush Fenway Racing is on a roll.
Six days after placing all five of its Sprint Cup Series cars in the top 10 at Michigan International Speedway, the Roush Fenway Racing gang was nearly as impressive at Bristol on Saturday night, with all five of its entries finishing in the top 12.
Did I forget to mention that Carl Edwards, a Roush driver, has also won three of the last four races? With just two races to go before the Chase For The NASCAR Sprint Cup, the Roush group has a legitimate shot of putting four of its five cars in the championship-determining field.
This would not be unprecedented, of course. The organization put all five of its cars in the Chase in 2005 – when the Chase group included just 10 drivers.
Putting four cars in this year’s playoff would give Roush Fenway a one-in-three shot of fielding a champion. And while those odds aren’t as good as 2005 when Joe Gibbs Racing’s Tony Stewart crashed the Roush party and captured the title, the result might be different this time.
No driver right now is hotter than Edwards. And though the Roush cars of Matt Kenseth, Greg Biffle and David Ragan have yet to win this season, the law of averages would have us believe that all three are due for a trip to victory lane.
If Edwards continues his winning ways or any of his playoff-contending teammates peak in the Chase, any driver without Roush Fenway Racing on his firesuit is going to have to climb a steep hill to become the 2008 Sprint Cup series champion.
