A top-five finish would bode well for Juan Pablo Montoya

July 9 2009

How does Juan Pablo Montoya do it? The driver at Earnhardt Ganassi Racing is 11th in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series standings, but he has yet to finish in the top-five this season.

It would be remarkable if Montoya makes the Chase For The Sprint Cup without a top-five finish. Of his eight top-10 finishes this season, he currently has finished sixth twice.

Montoya is the only driver in the top 12 who hasn't recorded a top-five finish this season. All of the drivers ahead of him have at least four top-fives, and points leader Tony Stewart has 10.

Without a doubt, this weekend's race at Chicagoland Speedway appears to be crucial for Montoya in terms of staying in the top 12. While he has not done all that well in his previous two starts at the 1.5-mile facility, finishing in the top 20 is nothing to sneeze at when you're trying to make the Chase.
