There's no escaping Digger, even in the movies

Carolyn grew up an army brat. It is her personal mission to live up to all stereotypes of the obnoxious NASCAR fan and to raise her children to follow in her footsteps.

So my children convinced me to take them to see "Alvin and the Chipmunks the Squeakquel."

And whether I took them as a means of penance or just out of sheer love of my offspring is irrelevant. After all, I survived the first movie, and what could be worse than three singing chipmunks?

The answer, I soon discovered, was six singing chipmunks. The movie was just as painful as I expected, but one surprise lurked through the high-pitched furry chorus: a cameo appearance by Digger.

Yes, Digger. Fox’s NASCAR gopher cam somehow carved out time in his busy schedule of starring in annoying cartoons to make a guest appearance in an annoying movie. A new high for Digger or a new low? I can only say that I was shocked to see him on the big screen.

While few four-legged mammals can claim the same fame as the Chipmunks, Digger is an icon in his own right. At the track, he has more hair than even Michael Waltrip. But I seriously wonder how many other moviegoers had any clue who the race-track rodent was.

His appearance was not lost on me, though, and so before Daytona has even come, I’ve already seen enough of the little critter to last me all season. And for the record, my kids loved the movie.
