More to Joe Gibbs than just football and NASCAR

July 31 2009

I watched a cable news program recently and was surprised to see the featured guest was none other than NASCAR’s beloved Joe Gibbs.

He was there to promote and speak about his new book, “Game Plan For Life.” What I found most interesting about the segment was the opportunity to hear Joe Gibbs, the man. I identify him so much by his NASCAR teams in the way many football fans see him as coach. As with many of those in the public eye, often we view him mostly through his professional successes.

Hearing from a prominent figure in NASCAR without the mention of anything racing gave me the opportunity to appreciate Joe Gibbs as an individual. He talked of his life and his failings, his beliefs and his faith.

I have never met Gibbs but certainly he is known around the track and the football field as a man of great character. It is refreshing to have the occasional moment when we can be reminded that those who fill our media reports are real people.

I am a Joe Gibbs fan. He took my Redskins to 3 Super Bowl wins, with 3 different QB's. He is the reason I am the "BIG" Nascar Fan I am today, you know his record. I was asked who my favorite driver was and I answered " Anyone that drives for Joe Gibbs Racing!".

Yes I am sure Joe Gibbs has a fascinating life story to tell. But I am more interested in Carolyn Brewster, As her articles are one of the centerpoint of my every issue of scene mag. I find your point of view as interesting and as common as mine. I always leave your page open for my wife to read which she loves in our "library". We attend two races every year and always refer to something Carolyn has said. It is also my personal mission up to live up to all stereotypes of nascar fans. And God forbid if something ever goes south to both our marriages, I here and now propose to you Carolyn. But you should know I am the opposite of army discipline, always forget my hat at the track to burn beet red, and would never cheer for anyone who would ever drive a ford or toyota. But I do have aisle seats at Dover and on the Pit terrace at the glen. Keep up the great work Carolyn I love ya!
