How about some respect during the national anthem

Carolyn grew up an army brat. It is her personal mission to live up to all stereotypes of the obnoxious NASCAR fan and to raise her children to follow in her footsteps.

NASCAR is as American as blue jeans, apple pie, and the Grand Canyon. What a great way to celebrate our freedom, with a race in Daytona where the sport has such deep roots. Roots that run through to a fan base which is unabashedly patriotic.

I am part of that fan base and, man, do I love this country. The red, white, and blue which oozes through a majority of NASCAR followers is something I found very appealing when I first began following the sport.

But, on such an American holiday, one of my pet peeves always surfaces. Time and time again, I have been in the grandstands and noticed fans not stop for the national anthem. Maybe these fans don’t know better, but someone needs to tell them. I don’t care what you’re doing – when the “Star Spangled Banner” plays, stop whereever you are, take off your hat and put your hand over your heart.

Sure, you’re a race fan … but you’re a citizen first.
