NASCAR doesn’t need Cup in Montreal
You’re going to hear a lot of stuff over the next few days about whether the Sprint Cup Series should go to Montreal. You’ll hear that it’s a great city and a great market and that it would be great to have a Cup race there.
But NASCAR ought to be careful before it decides to bring Cup to Montreal.
It’s a great event for the Nationwide Series, so why mess with that? Can’t the Nationwide Series be in the spotlight once in a while? Running Nationwide there allows Canadian drivers to get into good cars, which many wouldn’t be able to do if Sprint Cup went there because the driver points are so important to many more teams in Cup than Nationwide.
NASCAR also doesn’t really need another road course on the Cup schedule. Racing twice on road courses is enough of a challenge for many of these drivers, and another one doesn’t need to be added.
Yes, it’s a cool city and moving a Cup race there could help grow the sport more into Canada (of course, at the risk of alienating fans from whatever city loses a race). But before taking in all the hype on Montreal and Cup, there are questions that need to be asked other than just is it worth the headache for the teams to cross the border.

Aug 28, 2009 at 6:32 PMBob I can't agree more why do we as the USA always have to share our stuff with the rest of the world and all the people we as sports fans make rich think we are not good enough and want to look at Europe and Asia and leave us Behind. If the rest of the world wants to see it let them come here to watch it.

Aug 30, 2009 at 9:14 AMNASCAR should open up to the world. As far as you TRUCKERLEE2, why don't you inquire first about the real reasons why the U.S. economy is down. You should maybe look at your own (U.S.) compagnies who instead of having their product made in the U.S. have them made abroad to cut cost...NIKE??? etc...The U.S. need the rest of the world more then the rest of the world need the U.S. Please come out of your shell thinking that you are the centre of the world...YOUR NOT! As far the Sprint cup in Montreal, why not. Montreal has a world class race circuit. A race in Montreal, will only make Sprint cup drivers better drivers, brakind, acceleration, strategies...or are NASCAR drivers ONLY good in turning left...Furthermore, expending your venues will only help the U.S. by providing a broader exposure to the U.S. companies who are selling their stuff abroad...thus helping the U.S. economy. Sometime you have to look outside the box and see the big picture.

Aug 31, 2009 at 4:33 PMNORTHVETTER - the sport doesn't need "the world." It doesn't need to open up to it. Montreal is a dreadful course, an overrated racing demographic, and a hideously bad race. Racing IS NOT AND NEVER WILL BE about braking, acceleration, or strategy - it is about LEAD CHANGES, OPEN THROTTLE, COMBAT. It takes far more of a driver to fight for the lead open throttle on superspeedways than to brake and accelerate on a road course.
Report as AbuseThe argument that racing in Montreal will expand markets for sponsors is a lie, shown as such by the failure of the Motegi and Mexico races and the decline in sponsor interest in the sport despite already having worldwide exposure. NASCAR does not belong in Montreal.

Aug 31, 2009 at 11:24 PMMontreal is a good track for F1. But I agree, Cup doesn't need another road course. If they insist on another road course, there are plenty in the USA to choose from.
