Dale Earnhardt Jr. must raise game to rival Kyle Busch
Everyone wants to talk about a Kyle Busch-Dale Earnhardt Jr. rivalry.
Well, if there is a rivalry between the two drivers, it’s not a very good rivalry. At least not right now.
That’s because to have a good rivalry, the two rivals need to be running at or near the same level. And at this time, Busch and Earnhardt Jr. aren’t in the same league.
Maybe in two weeks, maybe in two months, it will be different. But right now, Busch is sixth in points and has three wins. Earnhardt Jr. is 18th in points and has no wins.
While they are nearly split on a race-by-race basis – Busch has done better than Earnhardt in just seven of the 13 races this year – Busch has been the one who has been winning races and leading laps. Busch has led 789 laps (18.6 percent of all laps run) to Earnhardt Jr.’s 90 laps led (2.1 percent) this year.
Until Earnhardt Jr. starts running near the front every week, don’t try to sell me that a little smack talk from Busch can make this a big rivalry. They need another finish like Richmond a year ago to give this thing some heat.

Jun 3, 2009 at 10:29 AMi agree. it has become obvious that these two dont like each other. it would be great to see them go at it for wins every week instead of wondering when kyle will lap him. it could be very soon and we could have some more bent sheet metal.

Jun 3, 2009 at 11:44 AMYou know as well as I do that if Dale Jr. and Kyle Busch were running #1 & #2 to finish a race, that Kyle wouldn't hesitate to "take out" Dale Jr as he has done before. That doesn't make Kyle a winner, that makes him a "CHEATER". Kyle has done this before and this is the root of the so called "Rivalry". Apparently by creating this "rivalry" he is attempting to "Psych-out" Dale Jr. and Jr. Nation as well. We as Jr. Nation do not Psych very easily, so go earn an honest living. Then we can truly call this a "rivalry".

What this sport needs is some good old fashion "Rivalry" The kind that made people watch on a Sunday afternoon the games between Dallas Cowboys and the Washington Redskins. Rivalry is great, it was there in the old days of NASCAR. Some of us old timers remember.

Maybe, Eric Almorola Nation or David Gililland Nation would be a better fit for your little rivalry. Sheesh.....

Jun 3, 2009 at 7:35 PMFor a rivalry you have to have 2 drivers of the same caliber. In this case the drivers are so far apart on the track that you cant even compare them. One driver has more talent than 3/4 of the field and is young and only cares about winning. The other driver has some talent but cant compete if he had to go one on one and is coasting on his contract. I wish we had the IROC series because we could settle it quick and painlessly. Kyle would win everyone of them.

The throwing of helments, running home, and avoiding the media...all part of the plan. If people are so worried about 88 t-shirts sales then maybe the 18 should sell tissues. Yeah, he has the wins and he takes his bows. But when he runs bad he simply runs...dignity..hah. Now who needs to raise their game. I don't know about raising but someone needs to do some growing.

Jun 4, 2009 at 12:51 PMOk here we go again lets hold class for all the JR fans the idea behind the whole sport is to.... wait for it WIN. I know most JR fans have no clue as to what that means, it means you cross the finish line before all the other cars not after them like he did to get is last so called win. Ok now for the truth
Report as Abuse#3 you know darn good and well Sr (a true driver) never did or would have a problem "moving" someone to win a race so that idea let’s see is DUMB!
#4 You mean raise his level he is so far off Busch’s level it is not even funny O wait yes it is
#9 Please I think Bush knows the idea is to win not wreck God himself
#11 If someone in the media would ask a half way decent question he might stick around and besides he is under no obligation to talk to the media.. O I believe the rule that the top 3 have to talk to the media is the Dale Sr rule correct.
#14 toddler really best you can do well that is sad but expected from a typical JR fan.
Bottom line Kyle drives so much like SR that all you can do is name call. Kyle will pass JR in wins this year and in number of Championships. 10 years driving no titles that is so sad...

They believed it to signify a chain of events BEYOND THEIR CONTROL that had been set in motion to challenge their authority. It was a time of great HYSTERIA panic and unrest as the tribes would rally around their master. Until eventually their paranoia reached a fever-pitch and they collapsed under their very own weight and pride. Ashes to ashes, a once proud nation turned to dust..... Heck even an old guy like Martin comes to Hendrick and drives circles around the Golden Child. Time to face the truth. Jr doesn't want to be in racing at this level. He can't cut the mustard. I can't hardly wait until he wins another race and you all think he's been resurrected. Feel sorry for his new crew chief cause he's really in a no win situation with Jr.

Report as AbuseJunior is trying to win fans and fame in his own name. He is getting CRUSHED under the Earnhardt Shadow. Dude is under way too much pressure and stress.
Busch is trying to win Races, Championships and Cups. He is having the time of his life.
Under these conditions JR has no shot in hell. That pressure is like a 100 lb weight tied to a chain on the back of his car.
The Media, Fans and everyone else needs to lay off him, give him some peace. They hound JR like he is the 3 time Champ and treat JJ like he is running in the 19 spot.
I bet if JR were allowed to race in obscurity he would perform like he did when he was Busch (now nationwide) Champ.
