It’s easy for fans to get angry over the points swapping/buying that will occur over the next few weeks as teams try to acquire guaranteed starting spots for the first five Sprint Cup races of the season and more specifically, the season-opening Daytona 500. The popular refrain is “use the points or lose them – no buying allowed.”

While former NASCAR Cup driver Mayfield appeared calm and collected during an appearance in a Richmond, Va. courthouse last Tuesday, he He had the appearance of a person worn down from all the troubles. He appeared as if he was working on lap 100 of a 200-lap race.

The big question that continued throughout testing was whether or not Danica Patrick would be locked into the Daytona 500. Or Mark Martin. Or Trevor Bayne. It likely will be a few weeks before teams know the answer. When practice begins Feb. 18 for the Daytona 500, the issue of who is guaranteed a spot in the race and who isn’t has to be settled.

The options appear to be few for Kurt Busch for next season.

Kurt Busch is suddenly a free agent at a time when NASCAR organizations are cutting back their number of Sprint Cup teams because of sponsorship and several veteran drivers are looking for rides. December is certainly not the time to be looking for a new ride, but that’s exactly what Busch began doing today after being released from Penske Racing.

Richard Childress was scheduled to meet with his teams Monday morning and hoped to decide on his driver-crew chief pairings for 2012. It’s likely he will name his crew chiefs later today or this week in what is expected to be part of a major crew chief shakeup in the garage. Although the moves haven’t been confirmed by the teams, sources indicated that several moves are likely to happen.

NASCAR and its tracks have to play the political game, so it’s not unusual for political dignitaries to show up at the track on a race weekend. But when President Barack Obama’s wife, Michelle, and Vice President Joe Biden’s wife, Jill, showed up at the Ford 400 on Sunday at Homestead-Miami Speedway, it was more than just to shake some hands.

COMMENTARY AVONDALE, Ariz. – A relieved and apologetic Kyle Busch appeared before the media Friday at Phoenix International Raceway. For a guy that has sometimes had a contentious relationship with the media, he seemed relaxed and comfortable taking questions about having to sit out at Texas for an incredibly stupid and dangerous retaliation against Ron Hornaday one week ago today.
