In search of the ‘real’ story at Hendrick Motorsports
Dawn is fast approaching as I crawl in the dark through a wooded area near the Hendrick Motorsports complex in Harrisburg, N.C. I’m crawling, in camoflage fatigues, because I don’t want anyone in the vast Hendrick conspiracy to see me.

I thought I’d seen everything in this sport until the other day when a new book arrived in the mail here at NASCAR Scene.

More than a week later, I still don’t understand why NASCAR made an issue out of its inspection of the No. 48 and No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolets after the Sprint Cup race at Dover.

Almost every neighborhood has a kid who seems almost superhuman.
Rating: 0.0 Comments 0Can Mark Martin boost NASCAR’s TV ratings?
I was much more optimistic of Mark Martin’s chances as the season began than many people I talked to. I figured the new Hendrick Motorsports driver would win one or two races. I thought he’d qualify for the Chase For The Sprint Cup, although I did not believe he would seriously challenge Jimmie Johnson and the other top championship contenders (you know, Kyle Busch and … well, never mind).

Say there are five laps to go at Richmond Saturday night, and your favorite driver, Kyle Busch or Brian Vickers or Matt Kenseth, trails the cutoff spot in the Chase For The Sprint Cup by 17 points.

A friend of mine sent me a link the other day to a great video on YouTube. You can find just about anything on that site: old concerts and videos from even the most obscure bands, vintage TV commercials from the 1940s and '50s, even entire movies.

Nobody’s perfect, and I make more than my share of mistakes. So I’m pretty forgiving when I see errors made by other professionals writing or talking about NASCAR.

I missed the start of Sunday’s scheduled coverage of the Pocono Sprint Cup race, because I was out of town at a family gathering. I turned on the TV in the late afternoon to catch the end of the race and saw Juan Pablo Montoya out front, leading the race. Impressive, I thought, to rebound from his Indy disappointment like that. As young preschool relatives ran and crawled around me, playing a game that I can only guess would be called, “I Can Be Wilder And Make More Noise Than You!” it dawned on me after maybe a minute that I was watching a rebroadcast of an old race during a rain delay.

Plenty of things can change in the seven races before the Chase For The Sprint Cup begins, but it’s not a stretch to say that this year’s Chase promises to be something very special.

This is going to sound like a paid advertisement. Trust me, it’s not. But after using a Sprint FanView for the first time, during last weekend’s Sprint Cup race at Chicagoland Speedway, I just have one thing to say: Every serious fan who attends races should have one.

TNT once again rolled out its “Wide Open” coverage of the Coke Zero 400 last night, and after watching the race, I feel compelled to say this: That should be the model for all NASCAR race coverage, not just because fans get to see more of the action, with limited commercial interruptions, but because it would probably be more effective for advertisers as well.

Sunday’s race at Infineon Raceway was so entertaining, I found myself trying to remember the last time I’d enjoyed a race at that track so much.
